Why This Resource Exists
Hancock County property research crosses offices. The County Clerk keeps recorded conveyances, liens and plats; the Assessor maintains owner and appraisal fields; the Sheriff’s Tax Office answers ticket questions; and the state’s GIS tools supply map context. These are linked sources, but they do not answer the same question. A useful search starts with the right record and continues to the office that can confirm it.
This private reference organizes the county’s entry points, the online coverage described by each custodian and the offline routes for older material. It does not host the deeds or tax accounts. Its purpose is to make the division between the assessor roll, the recorded chain and the tax ticket clear for a Hancock County parcel.
What the Reference Covers
- Record routes: property search, deed records, property tax records and parcel maps
- Custodians: Hancock County Clerk, Hancock County Assessor, Sheriff’s Tax Office and West Virginia GIS resources
- Search methods: address, owner and parcel lookups, deed-chain steps, ticket status and map interpretation
- Access notes: West Virginia public-record request rules, copy charges and in-person or microfilm paths when online files are missing
Limits of the Reference
Hancock County Property Records is a privately operated reference, not a county, state or court office. It has no authority over a public record or an assessment. It cannot:
- Retrieve, certify or revise a Hancock County record for a visitor
- Search title or assure that ownership is clear
- Set a parcel’s assessment or provide a sale appraisal
- Give legal advice about an instrument, boundary or tax appeal
- Guarantee that every portal, date or office detail remains current
The custodian must confirm, certify or correct its record. A title company, licensed surveyor or attorney handles work that a reference page cannot perform. Do not use information from this resource for a purpose regulated by the Fair Credit Reporting Act.
